ONE OF THE WHO’S EARLY ROADIES

“Before I started working for The Who I was with The Merseybeats. I worked with them while they went to the top and then on their way down Kit Lambert spotted them.

He decided that he wanted Billy Kinsley and Tony Crane as a singing duo and not as part of the band. Lambert then signed them as The Merseys and pulled in a different backing band. This was how I got to meet Kit and one night we went to see The Who play in West London. I thought they were really interesting and asked Kit if I could work with them as their roadie.

“At first he said I couldn’t because they already had a roadie [Dave Langston]. But there was some issue about the risks of the band’s van being pinched and having all their equipment stolen. The van would often be parked up outside Dave’s house every night. Someone had an idea to get a guard dog and Dave went down to the Battersea Dogs Home to get one, but while he was in the home someone stole the van, and as a result that was the end of Dave and I got the job. This was late 1964.
